Top 7 Caravanning Spots In Western Australia

Tuesday, 13th Oct 2020

Fiery sunsets over the country’s longest coastline, lush national parks, heritage and history – there are as many reasons to visit Western Australia as there are stars in the clear night skies.

Vast and rugged; with wineries, beaches, and animals found nowhere else on Earth, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to great caravanning spots, so we’ve rounded up the seven best to help you spend less time researching – and more time meeting quokkas.

Peaceful Bay, Walpole

If there’s a more fitting name than ‘Peaceful Bay’, we haven’t heard it!

Nestled midway between Denmark and Walpole alongside the Nornalup National Park, Peaceful Bay boasts beautiful beaches, immersive bushwalking and even whale watching from Conspicuous Cliff between July and October.

If beach fishing is your thing, you’ll love it here, while Rame – or Ram, depending on who you ask – Head offers an interesting lesson in colonial history.

Good to Know: You can stock up on essentials at the caravan park store and enjoy fresh fish and chips before tackling the epic Bibbulmun Track.

Miliyanha Camp, Millstream-Chichester National Park

With sunsets as red as the desert that surrounds it, Millstream Chichester National Park is an oasis in the Pilbara.

Just two hours from Karratha, alongside Millstream Creek, the camp is a gateway to ancient gorges, rock pools, and swimming holes like Python Pool, which lies at the base of a seasonal waterfall.

Rocky bluffs and rolling plains offer plenty to do as you explore the 200,000 hectares around Fortescue River, home to hundreds of different species of bird, mammal, reptile, and fauna.

This area is a nature lover’s dream, so bring binoculars!

Good to Know: Online booking is essential for Miliyanha Camp. While the roads in the Park are suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles, they may be impassable after heavy rain.

Cape Range National Park, Exmouth

One of the world’s most iconic national parks, Cape Range is an adventure waiting to happen. Amid awe-inspiring limestone ranges lie incredible canyons like the famous-yet-unspoilt Yardie Creek.

Better still, the park – which spans a whopping 50,581 hectares – is bordered by 50 kilometres of coast, including the aptly-dubbed Turquoise Bay, so you can hike all morning and swim all afternoon.

Take your pick of 11 campgrounds, where you can enjoy a world-renowned Exmouth sunset after a long day spent exploring World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef (home to ‘Humpback Highway’, where whales meet!)

Good to Know: All 11 campgrounds have toilets, but not much else, so be prepared. You’ll need a 4WD to access both One K Campground and Boat Harbour Campground. Sorry, pets are not welcome.

Kalbarri Red Bluff Tourist Park

Nestled amongst rocky cliffs, at the mouth of the Murchison, Kalbarri Red Bluff Tourist Park is the meeting point for rugged shoreline and the sparkling Coral Coast.

Here, you can find signs of ancient life on Earth while swathed in the beauty of the Kalbarri National Park, an impressive 186,000 kilometres of wildflower-rich parkland.

Nearby, Red Bluff beach offers gorgeous sunsets, migrating whales and dolphin pods, while inland is home to the iconic Nature’s Window.

Hike picturesque tracks for your chance to encounter emus, echidnas, and thorny devil lizards – but take care in summer – temperatures in the river gorges can reach 50 degrees!

Good to Know: Kalbarri sits six hours north of Perth. If your four-legged friend is adventuring with you, the powered ensuite caravan sites are all pet-friendly.

Denmark Ocean Beach Caravan Park

Four and a half hours from Perth lies Denmark, home to the breathtaking Ocean Beach.

Here, five glorious kilometres of shoreline is lapped by the blue Great Southern Ocean, which attracts surfers paddle boarders and kayakers. Just be careful around Ocean Beach inlet, which is known for strong currents, and even rips.

Make sure you venture the extra 45 minutes to do ‘The Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk’, which takes you over the canopy – and back in time.

Good to Know: The campsite offers big plots and great facilities including ample hot water and a well-equipped camp kitchen. Kids can ride bikes or rented go-karts around the camp’s sealed roads.

Taunton Farm Holiday Park

It’s impossible to ever tire of Western Australia’s immaculate beaches, but, if you’re keen on something a little different, head north to Taunton, between Margaret River and Cowaramup.

Expect a warm welcome and an unforgettable farming experience as you pitch in on a working beef and sheep farm at the award-winning Taunton Farm Holiday Park.

A wonderful home base for everything from winery tours to forests to cave treks, the farm is ideal for families looking for a change of pace.

Enjoy daily animal feeding and a kid’s playground and go-kart hire, plus a cosy campers’ kitchen with log fire.

Good to Know: The farm offers large drive-through caravan and motorhome sites, and medium camper trailer spots, as well as free gas BBQs.

Esperance Seafront Caravan Park

No trip around Western Australia would be complete without a visit to Esperance.

Located just over seven hours from Perth on the Southeast Coast, postcard-perfect Esperance spans 42,000 square kilometres, but houses only 15,000 people, so you’ll feel like this paradise is all yours.

Boasting more than 500 kilometres of coastline – including the Recherche Archipelago – plus the famous Great Australian Bight, and a perennial Mediterranean-esque climate, it’s no wonder travellers the world over aspire to Esperance.

A stay at Esperance Seafront promises to be laid back and uncomplicated. Here, you’ll be a stone’s throw from soft white sand and azure waters and just two kilometres from town.

Good to Know: 170 powered tent and camper sites, a kitchen, BBQ area, shop and free wi-fi make this a no-fuss stop while you enjoy paradise.

Whether you’re seeking family fun, a solo escape, or a couples adventure, Western Australia truly is an unmissable corner of the world.

Chasing dolphins through crystal waters, connecting with Australia’s rich indigenous culture, and dreaming under a blanket of stars in the desert – WA has it all.

Nothing left to do now but start packing!
