5 Places To Take Your Caravan Near Perth

Monday, 14th Mar 2022

Perched where the Swan River kisses the coast, Perth is a hub of beautiful beaches, cultural delights, and lush gardens.

But the beauty doesn’t stop at the city limits!

Within a couple of hours’ drive of the ‘city of lights’ lie some fabulous places to take your caravan for a self-contained getaway.

Here are five of the best.

1. Lancelin

Head north from Perth to WA’s Turquoise Coast and you’ll uncover a secret spot that few know, but all want to revisit.

The unique white dunes of Lancelin — the largest in WA — offer adventurers the adrenaline rush of sandboarding or quad biking.

Alternately, test your windsurfing skills against world-class waves or dive one of the 14 shipwrecks along the coast.

There are also plenty of ways to wind down in this relaxed fishing town.

Swim the sheltered reefs or scan the sea for sea lions and dolphins, then retire to one of two parks here.

Pet-friendly Lancelin Holiday Park (south) is a stone’s throw from the beaches, with powered bays from $45 a night.

The North End Park boasts powered sites, laundry and amenities.

2. Bussleton

Just a click over 2 hours south of Perth, casual Bussleton is a must for ocean lovers.

Here, a walk – or take the solar-powered train – along the 1.8 km jetty will put you in prime position to spot fish (and maybe a dolphin!) frolicking in the Indian Ocean.

There’s actually loads of ways to marvel at the sea life here – visit one of the world’s only underwater observatories, book a dive trip or whale watching adventure (September to December) or simply swim and snorkel from the beach.

There are plenty of places to park up, too.

Bussleton Holiday Village is just one option offering grassed powered sites, free BBQs, laundry, and playground.

Meanwhile, Four Seasons Holiday Park is a pet-friendly option right on beautiful Geographe Bay.

3. Toodyay

Head north out of the city for just over an hour and you’ll come to this river-based gem in the Avon Valley.

A historic farming town, the friendly locals welcome visitors to share a drink at the area’s local wineries or historic The Freemasons Hotel.

If you’d like to lose yourself in nature, walk through Pelham Reserve to see real WWII bunkers (now populated by kangaroos), or spot rare orchids at Wongamine Nature Reserve.

Toodyay has a couple of places to rest – pet-friendly Toodyay Caravan Park is right on the riverbank, with powered sites from $32 a night.

Meanwhile, Toodyay Holiday Park & Chalets, set in 25 acres of bush, is perfect for stargazing.

4. Mundaring

Less than an hour northeast of Perth, Mundaring, in the heart of the Perth Hills, feels a million miles away from the bustle of the city.

Set amongst soaring native trees of this leafy shire, Lake Leschenaultia is the perfect place to relax.

Cool down with a dip after picnicking on a shady beach or canoe out to explore the far reaches of this peaceful hideaway.

Bushwalkers can get close to native animals as you wind through the picturesque Jarrah forests surrounding the world-renowned Mundaring Weir.

Long and short-term parking and a market shop is available at Perth Hills Caravan Park, or head to Lake Leschenaultia, which offers powered sites from $20 per night – just be aware vehicle limits apply.

5. Bunbury

Take your caravan two hours south of Perth and you’ll find yourself in cosmopolitan Bunbury, a creative maritime city.

Home to one of the largest collections of street art, Bunbury invites you to explore on foot, then refresh at one of its many modern bars or first-class restaurants.

Bunbury is also renowned for the dolphins you can see on the shoreline.

Head to the popular Back Beach to catch a glimpse of a friendly Bottlenose, then stay for the spectacular sunset.

Bunbury Foreshore Holiday Park is right on the edge of Koombana Bay, only a five-minute walk to the town centre, and will set you back $65 a night for a powered, en-suite site.

Exploring all that Western Australia offers would take a lifetime, but, if you have just a weekend to spare, these places within around 2 hours of Perth are perfect to park your home on wheels.
