Car Stamp Duty Costs Guide Australia

In Australia, each state or territory is responsible for setting vehicle stamp duty fees. As such, each state and territory charges a different amount that is, in most cases, calculated based on the value of the vehicle as well as other factors such as its environmental impact.

It’s important to remember that vehicle stamp duty costs in the different states and territories around Australia are subject to change based on state or territory-led legislation.

New South Wales

The cost of vehicle stamp duty in New South Wales is calculated based on the value of the vehicle. Vehicles under $45,000 are charged at a rate of $3 per $100 of the vehicle’s value up to $44,999. Vehicles valued at over $45,000 are charged at a rate of $3 per $100 of the vehicle’s value up to $44,999, and then $5 per $100 of the vehicle’s value over $45,000.

Vehicles under $45,000: $3 per $100 of the vehicle’s value up to $44,999

Vehicles over $45,000: $1,350 plus $5 per $100 of the vehicle’s value over $45,000

Queensland

The cost of vehicle stamp duty in Queensland is calculated based on the value of the vehicles and the number of cylinders of the vehicle. A cylinder-based categorisation is a reflection of Queensland’s efforts to promote low-emission vehicles with the biggest incentives for hybrid and EV owners who pay just $2 per $100 of the vehicles’ value up to $100,000.

Hybrid and electric vehicles under $100,000: $2 per $100

Vehicles with one to four cylinders under $100,000: $3 per $100

Vehicles with one to four cylinders over $100,000: $5 per $100 (over $100,000)

Vehicles with five to six cylinders or rotary engines under $100,000: $3.50 per $100

Vehicles with five to six cylinders or rotary engines over $100,000: $5.50 per $100 (over $100,000)

Vehicles with seven or more cylinders under $100,000: $4 per $100

Vehicles with seven or more cylinders over $100,000: $6 per $100 (over $100,000)

Victoria

Vehicle stamp duty costs in Victoria are calculated based on the type and value of the vehicle. EV and Hybrid owners enjoy the lowest rate with $8.40 per $200 of the vehicle’s value for all values. It is, however, important to remember that EV owners in Victoria are subject to the 2.8c road use charge for each kilometre they travelled during the year.

Electric Vehicles & Hybrids: $8.40 per $200 of the vehicle’s value for all values

Passenger cars up to $76,950: $8.40 per $200 of the vehicle’s value

Passenger cars up to $76,950.01 – $100,000: $10.40 per $200 of the vehicle’s value

Passenger cars up to $100,000.01 – $150,000: $14.00 per $200 of the vehicle’s value

Passenger cars up to More than $150,000: $18.00 per $200 of the vehicle’s value

South Australia

Motorists in South Australia are charged stamp duty according to the value of their vehicle. Vehicles valued at over $3,000 are charged at the same rate of $4 for every $100 or part of $100 over $3,000.

< $1,000: $1 for every $100 or part of $100, with a minimum of $5 payable in all cases

Exceeds $1,000 but not $2,000: $10 plus $2 for every $100 or part of $100 over $1,000

Exceeds $2,000 but not $3,000: $30 plus $3 for every $100 or part of $100 over $2,000

Exceeds $3,000: $60 plus $4 for every $100 or part of $100 over $3,000

Tasmania                                          

Vehicle stamp duty in Tasmania is set at a flat rate for all vehicles over $40,000. Below the $40,000 stamp duty threshold in Tasmania, motorists are charged at increments based on the value of their vehicle.

Vehicles Up to $600: A flat fee of $20.

Vehicles $600 to $34,999: $3 per $100 of the vehicle’s value.

Vehicles $35,000 to $39,999: A flat fee of $1,050 plus $11 per $100 of the vehicle’s value.

Vehicles Over $40,000: $4 per $100 of the vehicle’s value.

Western Australia

Motorists in Western Australia are charged stamp duty at different rates according to the value of their vehicle. The formula for calculating vehicle stamp duty costs in Western Australia can be found below.

Up to $25,000: 2.75% of dutiable value

$25,000 – $50,000: R% of the dutiable value, where R is calculated based on the formula [2.75 + ((dutiable value – 25,000) / 6,666.66)] rounded to two decimal places

Over $50,000: 6.5% of dutiable value​​.

Australia Capital Territory

The Australian Capital Territory is the only state or territory in Australia that offers a complete stamp duty exemption to selected vehicles. Passenger vehicles rated “A” do not pay any duty up to the value of $45,000.

A Rated Vehicles: No duty for vehicles below or above $45,000.

B Rated Vehicles: Below $45,000: $1 per $100 of value. $45,000 or more: $450 plus $2 per $100 of value.

C and Non-rated Vehicles: Below $45,000: $3 per $100 of value. $45,000 or more: $1,350 plus $5 per $100 of value.

D Rated Vehicles: Below $45,000: $4 per $100 of value. $45,000 or more: $1,800 plus $6 per $100 of value.

Northern Territory

The Northern Territory imposes a flat stamp duty fees for all vehicles with a rate of 3% of the vehicle’s dutiable worth plus an $18 transfer of ownership charge.

Electric vehicles (EVs) valued up to $50,000 receive a stamp duty concession of up to $1,500, along with free registration, from 1 July 2022 until 30 June 2027​​ in the Northern Territory.
