GB Auto to Convert Hilux And Landcruisers to Electric Vehicles

Friday, 5th Feb 2021

GB Auto sets out to prove the electric vehicle critics wrong! A criticism that’s come from several quarters (including some prominent government figures) is that electric vehicles are of little use for heavy work, or work in challenging environments. GB Auto has shown otherwise, pioneering a partnership with Tembo (a Dutch subsidiary of VivoPower) to convert Landcruisers and Hilux autos into electric vehicles, using the electric car conversion kits manufactured by Tembo.

GP Auto has been trading since 1985. With a formidable reputation for providing high-grade vehicles for the mining sector, the agreement builds on the success of a batch of Landcruisers that were converted to run on electricity using the Tembo conversion kit, then trialled in a range of demanding mining environments.

The results were a resounding success, showing that with the right technology, an EV can hold its own against a petrol- or diesel-powered vehicle with ease, even in challenging circumstances.

Both Tembo and GB Auto were impressed by the success of the GB Auto Landcruiser conversions, which paved the way for the seven-year deal. The deal will mean that 2000 Hiluxes, as well as additional Landcruisers, will be transformed into electric vehicles, using the Tembo conversion kit.

With the first wave of converted vehicles likely to be available to companies later on in the year (subject to pandemic restrictions), the GB Auto/Tembo partnership represents a milestone in the progress of EV availability in Australia.

Not only is the deal a triumph for GB Auto (share values for the company rose by 31% in a day following news of the Tembo/GB Auto agreement), but it also makes a powerful statement regarding the importance and value which electric vehicles have in the commercial market.

Historically, electric commercial vehicles have had several powerful detractors, including Scott Morrison, Michaelia Cash, and Angus Taylor. A lack of political will to embrace fresh, green technology creates an additional barrier for Australia’s EV industry to overcome.

GB Auto’s Hilux ute conversions send out a powerful message that not only are electric vehicles as capable of handling the rough stuff as their diesel or petrol-powered counterparts but also that desirable models are now available in an environmentally friendly electric form.

Not only will this result in a significant diminution of running costs, but electric vehicles also assist companies to operate in a more environmentally responsible manner.

We look forward to seeing the converted Landcruisers and Hiluxes transform the market availability of high-grade electric vehicles aimed at the commercial sector.
