With the pristine beaches of the Great Australian Bight, lush vineyards boasting world-renowned wines, rolling hills rich in native flora and fauna, and its generally laid-back festival vibe, South Australia may well be the country’s hidden gem.
Better yet, the marriage of nature and culture along with friendly locals make it the perfect place to take your caravan.
From outback sites where the stars sparkle, to beach spots where the sea does, here are seven of the best.
What this camp lacks in size, it makes up for in atmosphere. Here, Coorong Lagoon – recognised by Ramsar as a place of international importance – provides tranquil views and ample activities.
Take advantage of the jetty and ramp onsite for boating, kayaking and fishing, or try to spot some of the 200 types of birds – including two rare species – that have been recorded here.
A walk will immerse you in nature – and literary history. Colin Thiele’s novella Storm Boy was set among the park’s sand dunes, lagoons and beaches.
You may even spot the campsites of Aboriginal travelers who stayed before you!
Good to know: With just three caravan sites, Long Point isn’t big, but boasts toilets, picnic tables and a rainwater tank.
Imagine waking up, surrounded by over nine thousand hectares of park, bordered by awe-inspiring cliffs. Just outside your door is the soft white beach, and a glassy sea, begging for snorkelers.
That’s what you have to look forward to at Cable Bay Campground.
Grab your walking shoes and explore the trails, meeting rare Tammar wallabies and hooded plovers. Then, visit The Ethel shipwreck, take advantage of world-class surf, or meet resident dolphins, seals, and sea-lions.
Good to know: Innes National Park is around three and a half hours from Adelaide. Only two of the nine sites accommodate a caravan.

If you’re after a place to rest your head that offers a cultural experience, incredible stargazing, and serenity in a heritage-listed oasis, look no further.
Surrounded by the Strzelecki Desert on Cooper Creek, Innamincka Regional Reserve spans a mind-blowing 1.3 million hectares and juxtaposes tranquil water holes with brutal desert backdrops.
Don’t be spooked by the campsite’s name (it’s actually very peaceful!) But do check out the spot where famed – but fated – travelers Burke and Wills drew their final breaths.
Good to know: The site accommodates up to eight vehicles and suits tents, camper trailers, and caravans. Dogs are allowed on a leash.
The rugged Eyre Peninsula is a haven for those seeking solitude and adventure, and nowhere represents this better than the breath-taking Waterloo Bay.
Camp for free at the edge of the spectacular limestone cliffs that fall off onto Talia Beach to be rewarded with beautiful sunsets, sea lions, dolphins and whales.
Explore the dramatic caves nearby and take your camera on a walk to The Woolshed, a water-worn granite cavern, with views out to the ocean.
If you’re brave, climb down into The Tub – a large crater with a tunnel connection to the sea.
Good to know: The site is only accessible to caravans in good weather. It hosts 20 pitches, however, there are no facilities, so stock up at the nearest town, Venus Bay.
Don’t be fooled by the name. Although Riba’s offers unique accommodation below ground, you’ll be able to park your caravan on the surface and enjoy a desert adventure, only five minutes’ drive from the opal capital of the world.
One of the highlights is the evening tour of Riba’s on-site mine, where you can explore a labyrinth of precious stones, then relax under a dark sky of sparkling stars.
By day, explore the underground homes, churches and art galleries of the historic mining town of Coober Pedy.
Good to know: Shaded, drive-through, powered and unpowered caravan sites are available, with BBQs and laundry, plus free hot showers. Unfortunately, furry friends have to stay home.
A mere 45 minutes from Adelaide, near Meadows, lies 3,000 hectares of practically enchanted forest, and within it is Chookarloo, a 23-site camp boasting rainwater tank (untreated), picnic tables and a pit toilet.
The camp provides a great, family-friendly base for exploring the park, where you can hone your mountain biking skills or enjoy horse riding and bushwalking, amongst possums, bandicoots, kangaroos and a variety of birdlife.
Owing to the bike tracks, barbecues and proximity to the city, this is a popular family spot, but if you’re sans kids, you can nip into the famous McLaren Vale wine region in under 20 minutes.
Good to know: Camping season runs April 1 – November 30 and fees apply. Dogs are welcome in plantation forest areas and on-leash in picnic areas. Check fire restrictions before you go!
With a caravan, tripping to an island paradise might seem an impossible dream, but it’s actually quite easy, via a pre-booked trip on the Sealink ferry.
Nestled on the north coast of Dudley Peninsula, Antechamber Bay North Campground houses 11 sites on four kilometers of unspoiled sand, surrounded by Lashmar Conservation Park.
Here you can swim, fish, and stroll down to Cape Willoughby Lighthouse before relaxing with a beach picnic and local wines; heralded as some of the world’s best.
Known as Australia’s fourth icon, the surprisingly large island itself is brimming with activity. Admire Admirals’ Arch, meet koalas, and dolphins, swim in turquoise waters, or take things up a notch with sand surfing at Little Sahara!
Good to know: The campground has toilets and water, but pets aren’t permitted. Campfires are permitted at Antechamber Bay within the pits on the south side. Fees apply.
If you’re taking your van on the open road to immerse yourself in culture, get back to nature, swap screens for the sea, and explore a desert one day and forest the next – before winding up on a postcard-perfect beach, South Australia is calling.
